Global toy shortage brings Yiwu big orders

It is learnedrecently from the toy dealers in Yiwu International Trade City that the business before the Spring Festival is surprisingly good,of which foreign orders account for over 80% . The shortage of toy products in the global market, especially in countries of Europe and America ,andthe big sale before Christmas in 2006 made the foreign toy dealers hurry to purchase in China after Christmas, said some relevant workers in Yiwu Toy Industry Association .
“The business was always not so goodin the periodbetween Christmas andthe Spring Festival in previous years, andmost of the foreign order forms usually came after the Spring Festival . Judging from the present situation, the peak of foreign orders has already come this year .” Tong Yuanzhi, vice chairmanof Yiwu Toy Industry Association, toldthe reporter in an interview,“the foreign dealers’inadequate stock is just one of the reasons; another reason is that Yiwu local toy manufacturers andd ealers lost confidence in export, due to the improvement of toy criterion in Europe andAmerica ”.Besides the toy markets in Europe an and American countries, those in other countries also suffer the problem of product shortage,Tong Yuanzhi added .
Tony,a purchaser from the U. S . checking the samples in the International Trade City, has already placedan order for several types of intelligent moppets . He acceptedthe reporter’s interview .
The demand of the U . S . for Chinese toy products was really huge at the end of last year and many American parents couldnot findsatisfactory toys for their children during the Christmas holidays,Tony said.
At present, however,Chinese toy manufacturers are confronted with serious problems, such as the rising labor cost, the shortage of labor force, the rising cost of raw materials, the present low export price, andthe higher freight cost . All of these further reduce the profits of toy manufacturers and make them tend to decrease their output . This also leads to the shortage of toy products in foreign toy markets .

Spring Festival

Far and away the most important holiday in China is Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese New Year. To the Chinese people it is as important as Christmas to people in the West. The dates for this annual celebration are determined by the lunar calendar rather than the Gregorian calendar, so the timing of the holiday varies from late January to early February.

To the ordinary Chinese, the festival actually begins on the eve of the lunar New Year's Day and ends on the fifth day of the first month of the lunar calendar. But the 15th of the first month, which normally is called the Lantern Festival, means the official end of the Spring Festival in many parts of the country.

Preparations for the New Year begin the last few days of the last moon, when houses are thoroughly cleaned, debts repaid, hair cut and new clothes purchased. Houses are festooned with paper scrolls bearing auspicious antithetical couplet (as show on both side of the page) and in many homes, people burn incense at home and in the temples to pay respects to ancestors and ask the gods for good health in the coming months.

"Guo Nian," meaning "passing the year," is the common term among the Chinese people for celebrating the Spring Festival. It actually means greeting the new year. At midnight at the turn of the old and new year, people used to let off fire-crackers which serve to drive away the evil spirits and to greet the arrival of the new year. In an instant the whole city would be engulfed in the deafening noise of the firecrackers.

On New Year's Eve, all the members of families come together to feast. Jiaozi, a steamed dumpling as pictured below, is popular in the north, while southerners favor a sticky sweet glutinous rice pudding called nian gao.

Planning--- the history of Wushang

With a long history, Yiwu was named Wushang County in the 25th of King Yingzheng of Qin Dynasty (B.C.222), and renamed Yiwu in A.D.624. In 1988, Yiwu County was transformed into Yiwu City.

The finished construction area of Yiwu County covered 2.8 square kilometers in 1984. During the past 20 years, Yiwu County has become a world-famous international trade city from a county-level city in the middle of Zhejiang province, since it made a reasonable and scientific goal for the city by four-time overall city planning. Its urban area has already extended to 52 square kilometers.

Choucheng, the county town of Yiwu, was just a very small village, according to the county annals of Jiaqing period, and the development was very slow until the liberation of China. And then it developed itself into a city of more than 200 hectares in the early 1980s.
